We Are Champions for Peace. #VOYCE
The International Day of Peace is observed every year on September 21 to promote the ideals of peace and non-violence among nations and peoples. This year’s International Day of Peace (IDP) theme is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals. The theme highlights the interconnectedness of peace and sustainable development. This year’s theme is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. Fostering peace contributes to the realization of the SDGs, and achieving the SDGs will create a culture of peace for all.
One of the groups that took part in this global initiative was WAA Cameroon's Bambili Youth Think Tank Club for Peace, a network of young leaders and change-makers who are passionate about social justice and community development. The club decided to organize a hiking activity to explore different ways of promoting peace and harmony in their local context.
The hiking activity took place on September 21, 2023, at the Bambili Hills, a site that offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. More than 20 youths from different backgrounds and disciplines participated in this activity, which aimed to foster dialogue, collaboration, and mutual understanding among them.
The participants reflected on the role of the natural environment in bringing peace and harmony, and how they can protect and preserve it for future generations. They also discussed the challenges and opportunities that they face in their communities, and how they can use their skills acquired from the VOYCE project and talents to contribute to positive change. They shared their experiences, insights, and aspirations with each other, and learned from each other's perspectives.
The hiking activity was not only a physical exercise but also a mental and emotional one. The participants enjoyed the scenic views and fresh air, and felt a sense of connection with nature and with each other. They returned home with renewed energy and commitment to Act for Peace in their respective communities.
The hiking activity was one of the many ways that WAA Cameroon's Bambili Youth Think Tank Club celebrates and advocates for peace. The club is part of the wider WAA Cameroon network engaged in peace building processes.
The Bambili Youth Think Tank Club hopes that their hiking activity will inspire other youths to join them in their quest for peace. They believe that peace is not only a goal, but also a process, and that every action counts. They invite everyone to join them in their mission.
