WAA Cameroon Strengthens Educational Access Through School Support and Scholarships

At WAA Cameroon, we believe that education is a fundamental right, and we are committed to ensuring that children and youth across the country have access to quality learning environments. In our ongoing efforts to support education, we have undertaken a nationwide initiative to equip community schools with essential learning materials and provide scholarships to students affected by the crisis.

Equipping Schools with Essential Learning Materials

The educational system in many parts of Cameroon has suffered setbacks in recent years, leaving students without proper facilities to support their learning. To address this, WAA Cameroon, with support from the Open Society Foundation, has furnished community schools with chairs, benches, tables, and blackboards. This initiative aims to create a conducive learning environment for students and help them continue their education without hindrance.

From October 28 to November 1, 2024, our team identified schools in two subdivisions - Menchum Valley and Fungom where the need for support was most critical. A total of 17 schools benefited from this initiative.

These schools received a total of 100 benches, 15 blackboards, 70 chairs, and 40 tables. Notably, the furniture was locally produced by skilled youth in the community, creating an opportunity for economic empowerment among local carpenters while simultaneously addressing the shortage of school furniture.

Supporting Students with Scholarships and Registration Fees

Recognising the financial challenges that prevent many children from attending school, WAA Cameroon has also provided scholarships and school fee support to students in need. Between November 4 and November 8, 2024, we successfully enrolled and supported 300 students and 100 pupils who had dropped out due to the ongoing crisis. This initiative ensures that these children can continue their education without financial barriers.

A Lasting Impact on Communities

Our efforts to equip schools and sponsor students have been met with overwhelming appreciation from community leaders, teachers, and beneficiaries. These contributions not only improve learning conditions but also promote equal access to education for vulnerable children. One of the head teachers from Cameroon Baptist Convention (C.B.C.) Befang expressed gratitude, stating:

“We are very much delighted for the gesture WAA Cameroon and Open Society Foundation have given to us at the peak of the crisis. What you have given today will go a long way to help our seating positions and help the teaching and learning processes to go on successfully. We are very grateful.”

WAA Cameroon remains steadfast in its mission to support education across the country, ensuring that no child is left behind. Through partnerships and community engagement, we will continue to champion initiatives that foster academic growth and create brighter futures for Cameroon’s youth.
